Zoe Saldana recalls ‘dream’ reception for Emilia Pérez at Cannes Film Festival
The actress hailed the musical comedy drama as “provocative and audacious”.
Zoe Saldana has described the reception Emilia Pérez received at the Cannes Film Festival as a “dream come true”.
The new musical comedy drama tells the story of Rita, an overqualified and undervalued lawyer who is hired by a criminal organisation.
During an appearance on The Graham Norton Show on Friday, Zoe recalled feeling overwhelmed by the positive reaction to her latest film when it premiered at the iconic French festival earlier this year.
“The recognition we received at the Cannes festival as an ensemble was a dream come true,” she explained. “We were not expecting it.”
Emilia Pérez stars Spanish actress Karla Sofia Gascón in the title role, and Zoe had nothing but praise for her castmate’s knockout performance.
“She is an amazing actress and knocked it out of the ballpark. She was superb and all we did was to try and keep up,” Zoe shared.
The Spanish-language French movie, which was written and directed by Jacques Audiard, also features Selena Gomez.
Selena revealed she has high hopes for the film and it’s star Karla.
“I couldn’t be more proud to stand by Karla because she could make history,” she explained. “She is an incredible woman.”
When asked to describe the film, Zoe revealed it will appeal to a wide range of cinemagoers.
“All I can tell you is that it is provocative, audacious, and brave,” she teased. “It’s a breath of fresh air, it’s camp and sexy, and it is important.”
Emilia Pérez is released in select UK theatres from 25 October.
