Selena Gomez calls Emilia Pérez her ‘proudest moment’

Selena Gomez feels honoured to be involved with an acclaimed film.

Selena Gomez has described her new film Emilia Pérez as her “proudest moment”.

During an interview with Extra, the Only Murders in the Building actress reflected on the positive reception her new movie received at the Cannes Film Festival in May.

“We hadn’t seen the movie, the cast, so I didn’t know what to expect,” she said of the premiere. “I trust Jacques (Audiard) completely, but I was sitting down and I was really nervous because I didn’t know what the reaction was going to be after… I was shocked. It was beautiful.

“I truly feel honoured that it’s even being acclaimed the way that it is. It’s such a beautiful story, so if anything, this is my proudest moment for sure.”

Gomez added that she was so happy for her co-star Karla Sofía Gascón, who plays the titular character in the Spanish-language crime musical.

“I was actually more tearful for Karla because she put her whole being into this and she just deserves all the praise,” she gushed.

Gomez, Gascón and their co-stars Zoe Saldaña and Adriana Paz were jointly awarded the Best Actress prize, making Gascón the first openly trans actor to win a major accolade at the famed festival, while the film itself won the Jury Prize.

The singer also praised Audiard for “giving (her) this opportunity as an actor” and trusting her to speak Spanish.

“I really feel like this has been such a blessing,” she shared. “It meant the world to me that he trusted me with that (speaking Spanish) and it meant a lot to my family.”

Emilia Pérez will debut on Netflix on 13 November after a limited theatrical run.
