Ke Huy Quan wanted to do all his own fights for With Love
Ke Huy Quan wanted to follow in the footsteps of his heroes Jackie Chan and Samuel Hung.
Ke Huy Quan was determined to do all of his own fights in his upcoming action movie With Love.
The Goonies actor recently wrapped production on the action film, which was produced by The Fall Guy filmmaker David Leitch.
Quan, who showed off his martial arts skills in Everything Everywhere All At Once, was determined to do all of his own fights, just like his heroes Jackie Chan and Samuel Hung.
“I grew up watching Jackie Chan and Samuel Hung, you know, the Hong Kong ’80s action movies, and they all did their own fights so going into this one, I knew the very first thing I wanted to do was to do all my fights,” he said on the Armchair Expert with Dax Shepard podcast. “There’s something special about watching a movie knowing that the actors are doing it all and not some stunt double.”
However, Quan, who used to be an assistant fight choreographer, admitted that the stunt work took a greater toll on his body now he’s 53.
“Mentally, I think I’m 21. But when I do it, I’m surprised, I go, oh wow, I’m feeling really proud because I can do the moves,” he recalled. “Then I wake up the next day, I go, ‘Oh my God, my back!’ But nothing a couple of Tylenol wouldn’t fix, you know?”
With Love also stars Ariana DeBose, who presented Quan with the Best Supporting Actor Oscar for Everything Everywhere All At Once in 2023.
The film, which marks Quan’s first lead role, will be released in February.
