Legendary producer Jerry Bruckheimer never intended to release four films in the space of four months this year.

The 80-year-old Hollywood titan kicked off his prolific year with Guy Ritchie’s The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare in April and swiftly followed it up with Joachim Rønning’s biographical drama Young Woman and the Sea, starring Daisy Ridley, in late May.

This week, only a week after Young Woman and the Sea’s release, Bad Boys: Ride or Die will hit cinemas, and a month later, Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F will premiere on Netflix on 3 July.

During an interview with Cover Media, Bruckheimer revealed he never would have predicted such a busy four months.

“You work on these things for years and you (can) never predict when they’ll say, ‘Go make it.’ So it just so happened they said go make four at the same time. When they tell you to go do it, you go do it,” he said.

He noted that outside of two projects slightly overlapping, they all went into production at different times so he was “lucky” enough to visit them all.

Bruckheimer began development on Young Woman and the Sea in 2015 and it finally began filming in 2022. He admitted that the nine-year gap between optioning the book and releasing the adaptation is nothing compared to the 30-plus-year waits to make Top Gun: Maverick and Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F.

“I always expect the worst and hope for the best but we keep working on these movies,” he explained. “We took 35 years to get Top Gun made, another one, it took us 40 years to get another Beverly Hills Cop made, so you know, nine years on this one is not terrible.”

Young Woman and the Sea is in select cinemas now. Bad Boys: Ride or Die will be released in theatres from Wednesday.
