Dwayne Johnson “cannot wait” to start filming the live-action version of Moana.

The Fast and Furious actor announced in March that he is working on a live-action “reimagining” of the 2016 Disney animation and will be starring as Maui, the character he voiced in the original.

During an appearance on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon on Monday night, Johnson revealed that he will be shooting the movie musical next, now that the actors’ strike is over.

“My next project that I will be shooting will be a live-action version of Moana,” he told host Jimmy. “I am the real-life Maui. I’m so excited about this. It’s a way to pay homage to not only my Polynesian heritage and culture (but) it’s just such an incredible story that resonates with everybody around the world, especially young girls.

“Tommy Kail is going to direct it, he directed the incredible (Broadway musical) Hamilton. He’s incredible. Coming back to do all the music of Moana is Lin-Manuel Miranda. Amazing. So, dude, I cannot wait.”

The movie follows Moana and Maui as they work together to lift a curse on her island. Johnson explained that the message of the movie empowers young girls.

“(It teaches them) there’s what’s in front of you and then there’s the stuff you can’t see that’s way out there and have faith and confidence in who you are and go out there even if you can’t see it,” he said.

Johnson concluded his interview by performing a surprise rendition of Maui’s signature song You’re Welcome.

Auli’i Cravalho, who voiced Moana in the original, will produce the project but she will not reprise the role. Her replacement has not yet been announced.
