Cillian Murphy thrilled to ‘get the band back together’ for 28 Years Later
Cillian Murphy did not explicitly confirm he will reprise his role as Jim.
Cillian Murphy is thrilled to “get the band back together” for 28 Years Later.
It was announced in January that director Danny Boyle and writer Alex Garland are making a sequel to 28 Days Later, their 2002 zombie thriller, and hoping to launch a trilogy.
During an interview with Variety on Thursday, the Irish actor was asked if he will be reprising his role as Jim in the follow-up.
“I can’t give much more at this point,” he replied. “But I’ve always said I would love to be involved because that movie changed everything for me and I have I have great affection for it and for those guys Alex and Danny.
“I never watch my own films, except that one. It’s always on around Halloween and during the pandemic people were constantly sending me clips. And I’ve shown it to my kids. And it’s really stood up, even though it’s something like 23 years old now. So I’m really thrilled that we’ll get the band back together to make this one.”
The Peaky Blinders star previously expressed interest in making 28 Years Later with the duo during the Oppenheimer press tour last year, telling Collider, “If Alex thinks there’s a script in it and Danny wants to do it, I’d love to do it.”
In the original, Murphy’s character Jim wakes up from a coma to discover society has been wiped out due to a virus that turns people into crazed killers.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Boyle is attached to direct the first instalment of 28 Years Later while Garland would write all three, if greenlit.
Murphy, a current Best Actor nominee, is in the middle of a busy week. He attended the Oscars luncheon in Los Angeles on Monday, presented his Oppenheimer director Christopher Nolan with the BFI Fellowship in London on Wednesday, and his latest film, Small Things Like These, will open the Berlin International Film Festival in Germany on Thursday night.
