Cillian Murphy thinks his 2005 film Red Eye is “a good B movie” rather than “a good movie” in general.

In Wes Craven’s psychological thriller film, Rachel McAdams plays a hotel manager who gets caught up in an assassination plot led by Murphy’s Jackson during a red-eye flight.

While the film has stood the test of time with horror fans, the Oscar-nominated actor isn’t so certain of its quality.

“I love Rachel McAdams and we had fun making it,” Murphy told GQ. “But I don’t think it’s a good movie. It’s a good B movie.”

B-movie was the term given to describe low-budget formulaic films that were intended to serve as the second feature on a double bill. They were cheaply produced and considered to have less artistic value than the main movies.

The Peaky Blinders star explained that he was drawn to the role because he liked how Jackson seemed like a charming gentleman before his sinister motive was revealed.

“I think it’s the duality of it. It’s why I wanted to play it,” he shared. “That two thing. The nice guy and the bad guy in one. The only reason it appealed to me is you could do that (snaps fingers) that turn, you know?”

Recalling her time on the set, his co-star McAdams revealed that she was always asked if Murphy’s eyes were genuinely that blue.

“They say the nicest people sometimes make the best villains,” she reflected. “We’d listen to music and gab away while doing the crossword puzzle, which he brought every day and would graciously let me chime in on.

“I think the number one question I got about Cillian way back then was whether or not he wore contact lenses.”
