Channing Tatum urges cinemagoers to watch original films
The star finds it frustrating when people complain about the lack of original movies.
Channing Tatum has urged cinemagoers to watch something that “isn’t a Marvel movie”.
The star is currently promoting his new space race film Fly Me to the Moon, which also stars Scarlett Johansson. Channing has shared his hopes that cinemagoers will go and see his original film, rather than flocking to the usual superhero blockbusters.
“When people start complaining they don’t make original stuff anymore, it’s like, OK, well, have you seen Tar? Have you seen Anatomy of a Fall?” the actor said as he attended the Spanish premiere of Fly Me to the Moon in Madrid this week.
‘I’m like, maybe go try to see something that isn’t a Marvel movie. I love those movies, but I also see the other things,’ Channing admitted.
Fly Me to the Moon is billed as an alternative history romcom which sees ad executive Kelly Jones, played by Scarlett, hired by the US government to ‘sell’ the 1969 Apollo 11 moon landing to a dubious public.
The comedy had an estimated $100 million (£78 million) budget, but is only expected to take in around $10 million (£8 million) when it opens this weekend.
Despite playing Black Widow in the Marvel franchise, Scarlett echoed Channing’s thoughts and reminded fans that their cinema choices can have a huge impact on the future of filmmaking.
“We’re in this transitional time where there’s a lot of power in the hands of the audience,” she shared. “If they go and support original ideas, then more of them will get made. It’s just the way that it goes, right?”
Scarlett also conceded that in the current financial climate, studios are “desperate”, and added the industry can be a “tough business”.
