Stephen Lang to play bad guy in all four Avatar sequels

The actor played Colonel Quartich in the 2009 epic.

Stephen Lang will play the villain in all four Avatar sequels, despite the fact his character was killed off in the 2009 original.

His Colonel Quartich was shot in the chest, but director James Cameron has already revealed Lang will be back for the first sequel and now the filmmaker confirms he's committed to the same bad guy in all his Avatar films.

"The interesting conceit of the Avatar sequels is it’s pretty much the same characters," the director tells Empire. "There are new characters and a lot of new settings and creatures, so I’m taking characters you know and putting them in unfamiliar places and moving them on this greater journey.

"But it's not a whole bunch of new characters every time. There’s not a new villain every time, which is interesting. Same guy. Same motherf**ker through all four movies. He is so good and he just gets better."

And Cameron has a lot of faith in his recurring villain, adding, "I know Stephen Lang is gonna knock this out of the park."

Cameron and Lang recently started work on the back-to-back sequels, which will debut at the cinema on 18 December, 2020.

Avatar 3 is slated for a 17 December, 2021 release, while Avatar 4 and 5 will be in cinemas on 20 December, 2024 and 19 December, 2025, respectively.

Cameron announced the news there would be four Avatar sequels, instead of the previously planned three, at CinemaCon last year (16). The filmmaker explained that each of the four sequels will be a stand-alone film, but will fit together to create a saga.

The original movie, released back in 2009, followed the story of a paraplegic marine, played by Sam Worthington, who falls in love with Zoe Saldana's alien native warrior, Neytiri, during a unique mission to the moon Pandora.

Sigourney Weaver, Michelle Rodriguez, and Giovanni Ribisi co-starred in Cameron's epic sci-fi fantasy drama, which is still the highest grossing film of all time, racking up an enormous $2.78 billion at the box office worldwide.

Avatar 2 was initially slated to hit theatres in December, 2018, but Cameron scrapped the release date to give himself more time to develop technology for the film.
