Sarandon: I knew Brad Pitt was special
Susan Sarandon and Geena Davis recall Brad Pitt’s Thelma & Louise audition.
Susan Sarandon knew Brad Pitt was “special” as soon as she saw him on screen.
The Hollywood hunk first grabbed the public’s attention in Susan’s hit 1991 film Thelma & Louise. Brad went on to become one of the industry’s most successful actors, starring in films including Meet Joe Black, Mr & Mrs Smith and Moneyball, but this was no surprise to Susan.
“When I saw the movie and I saw him in the scene in the police station, that's when I knew that he really was something special,” the 67-year-old told The Hollywood Reporter. “There was really something there. He's a very smart guy.”
Susan’s co-star in the classic female adventure film Geena Davis also saw Brad’s appeal from the get go. Unfortunately for the 58-year-old, she was so sidetracked by Brad’s good looks that she almost ruined his audition.
“I actually read with him first — there were five candidates for the role,” she recalled. “And then he came in — this is so embarrassing — but I got a little distracted during the scene, you know? I was forgetting my lines. I was like, ‘I'm totally screwing up this kid's audition.’”
But it seems like the female stars weren’t the only ones taken in by the 50-year-old’s charms. The film’s director Ridley Scott also took a hands on approach when dealing with the film’s memorable love scene.
“Ridley's also very much into the look of things,” Geena explained. “He was personally spraying the Evian on Brad's stomach for the shots where you see his abs and I'm like, ‘Hello!’”
