Rose Byrne: Boring roles are frustrating

Rose Byrne doesn't bother with a role unless it pushes the storyline forwards.

Rose Byrne is "frustrated" by the amount of wife and girlfriend roles which comes her way.

The 35-year-old actress has made a name for herself in Hollywood thanks to parts in the likes of Bridesmaids and Bad Neighbours.

It's taken a bit of time though, not least because many of the offers which come her way fail to set Rose's world alight.

"I want to keep working as much as I can and take advantage of the opportunities that have opened up to me.

"I've spent a lot of time dealing with the reality that good roles are very hard to find for women - sometimes I've found it frustrating to be offered roles that are the wife or mother or girlfriend rather than the character that drives a story forward," she told British magazine Hello!

"I'm glad to be finally getting to do more of those roles. It's worth the wait if you get to do something you love."

Although Rose has carved out a niche for herself in comedy, she won't just take on funny roles.

She's done serious work in the past too, like US TV show Damages, and enjoys being able to mix it up a bit. That said, it irritates her when others assume starring in comedies is a cushy choice.

"As an artist I think comedic actors are really underrated. It's incredibly difficult and the people I've been lucky enough to work with, they just make it look effortless," she said.

"I don't see it as a barrier to doing dramas, either. For years, I was only playing very serious kinds of women.

"I feel like I can keep doing both comedies and dramas and switch back and forth now because directors and producers know I can do both."
