Guillermo del Toro talks Crimson Peak’s sex scenes
Guillermo del Toro admits some of the sex scenes in Crimson Peak are more "overt" than in other gothic romance features.
Guillermo del Toro's daughter keeps quizzing him about Crimson Peak's sexy scenes.
Charlie Hunnam, Jessica Chastain and Tom Hiddleston star in the fantasy horror about a woman who is torn between her childhood friend and a mysterious outsider after a family tragedy strikes.
The disturbing flick is considered a gothic romance, which means there are a few kinky scenes involved. It was a little uncomfortable for director Guillermo, who's never really incorporated that element into his films.
"It was strange. My daughter asked me questions about how are you gonna shoot that. I go, 'I don’t know!' She was like, 'Dad, DAD, how are you going to shoot that?' I go, 'Ehh,'" he squirmed to LA Times.
"It’s really a movie that is traditionally gothic romance, but it has two or three violent moments that are very violent. And one or two little sexual things that are more overt than gothic romance normally is."
Guillermo has a cult following thanks to films including Hellboy and Pan’s Labyrinth and many loyal fans are over the moon he's now tackled this genre. The filmmaker explained a little about why the time felt right to branch out.
"I think that there is a part of it that I find very attractive. And it took me a while to, at least, put it in terms that I wanted," he revealed.
"The gender in gothic romance it’s normally a desperate heroine that has to be pure with a dark, brooding man that ends up being innocent of the charges he was accused of. And I wanted to have a more proactive, really strong central female character. And I wanted a guy who was not necessarily innocent of the things he is thought of having done. That took a while. I’d been fiddling with the movie for the last eight years. That took a while solving."
Crimson Peak hits cinemas from October.
