Guillermo del Toro: 'Hellboy 3 is not happening'
The filmmaker spoke with franchise star Ron Perlman last month (Jan17) about the possibility of a third film.
Filmmaker Guillermo del Toro has officially scrapped plans to develop a third Hellboy movie.
Last month (Jan17), the director sent fans into a frenzy when he offered them a challenge to help bring a new instalment to the big screen.
"The HELLBOY III is our chance to vote the right way in 2017! If 100k votes come in 24 hours I promise to have a sit down w (with) Da Perl (franchise star Ron Perlman) & Mignola (Hellboy creator Mike Mignola)," he posted on Twitter.
The goal was reached and del Toro set up a meeting with his leading man.
"I spoke with Ron Perlman," he tweeted. "He's in for the sit down. Will approach Mignola next. Will keep you posted. Very moved by your love of pt I & II."
However, it seems talks have since fallen through and the movie will not be hitting the big screen.
"Hellboy 3 Sorry to report: Spoke w all parties. Must report that 100% the sequel will not happen," del Toro wrote on Twitter on Tuesday (21Feb17). "And that is to be the final thing about it."
Perlman followed up with his own message minutes later, writing, "Superhero seeks employment. Likes, pizza, cats, and the Marx bros."
The director's first two Hellboy films, starring Perlman as the red, horned, grumpy do-gooder, were critical hits but both failed to set the box office on fire.
While there will be no Hellboy project, Perlman and del Toro have continued to enjoy a good working relationship, recently reuniting for animated series Trollhunters.
