Charlize Theron sparred with Keanu Reeves while training for Atomic Blonde

Charlize Theron, who plays an assassin in Atomic Blonde, paid tribute to the "eight amazing trainers that basically made me puke every single day.”

Charlize Theron found the perfect fight partner in John Wick star Keanu Reeves as she prepared for her role as an assassin in movie Atomic Blonde.

The movie, which is directed by John Wick co-helmer and former stuntman David Leitch, has been dubbed a female version of the successful franchise, which stars Keanu in the titular role.

As well as immersing herself in heavy duty training in preparation for ruthless spy Lorraine Broughton's fight scenes, Charlize revealed she also got some of her training in with the John Wick star himself, who was preparing for the 2014 movie at the same time.

“We would spar with each other and s**t like that… it was just very macho," she smiled, speaking at a sold out screening of Atomic Blonde at the SXSW conference on Sunday (12Mar17) at the Paramount Theater in Austin.

A trailer for the movie, which is based on 2012 graphic novel The Coldest City by Antony Johnston, dropped last week, revealing Charlize in kicka*s mode, complete with a British accent in the Focus Features flick - set in '80s Berlin.

Lorraine is dispatched to the city to retrieve an important list containing the names of double agents. X-Men star James McAvoy appears as David Percival, who is also in pursuit of this list, and is paired with the blonde assassin to locate it.

The film is packed with close-combat fight sequences, similar to director Leitch’s previous action flick John Wick, and when asked about prepping for the role, Charlize paid tribute to the "eight amazing trainers that basically made me puke every single day.”

Not only did they make the Oscar-winning actress sick, but the side effects of the intense training took an even bigger toll.

“I actually cracked two teeth in the back of my mouth while fighting, because apparently my arm strength wasn’t strong enough,” she explained. “I went into surgery right before we went out to Berlin to do this film and I’m still f**king dealing with it.”

And James admitted that while his fight scenes weren’t as challenging as Charlize's, he entered the production with his own physical handicap.

“I broke my hand in the movie I made before this so I had to do this movie with a broken hand," he shared of the injury he suffered on the set of Split.

Atomic Blonde will debut in theatres from July (17).
