Arnold Schwarzenegger inspired Kaya Scodelario's career

Kaya Scodelario refuses to star in films in which an older man plays her love interest.

British actress Kaya Scodelario's love of movies was inspired by a childhood obsession with Arnold Schwarzenegger.

The Maze Runner star, 25, was raised in London by her mother, a Brazilian immigrant.

As a child she was drawn to the muscular Austrian-born star as he had left his homeland and made it in Hollywood.

"He was the first foreign actor I ever saw in Hollywood movies," she told The Guardian. "He had an accent and, because my mum had an accent, that really inspired me. I used to look through (British TV listings magazine) the Radio Times for his name. I had this huge, long Scodelario name that no one else had and he had this huge name."

Kaya has since become disillusioned with her childhood hero due to his move into politics as the Republican Governor of California.

She added, "Obviously, as I've got older, politically and personally...not so great."

The actress stars as astronomer Carina Smyth in the new Pirates of the Caribbean movie, Dead Men Tell No Tales.

Kaya enjoyed making the blockbuster movie, and struck up a friendship with the face of the buccaneering franchise Johnny Depp.

"I think we got on the second I was there because I tried to treat him as a normal person and I had the same sort of conversation I would have had with a person in a pub," she explained.

Despite her delight at working with established stars on Pirates of the Caribbean, Kaya has turned down multiple roles requiring her to be romantically paired with older actors.

"Nine out of 10 times, if I read a script, it will be me being with a guy that is twice my age, which is really f**king weird," she revealed.

Happily, in Dead Men Tell No Tales her character's love interest Henry Turner is played by Australian actor Brenton Thwaites, 27.

"I was concerned that they would want me to play a romantic part against someone in their 50s and that would be heartbreaking," Kaya explained. "So I was extremely relieved that Brenton is only a year older than me."

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales starts hitting cinemas from 23 May (17).
